Restructure Support & Process Improvement

During a significant company restructure, an emerging renewables contractor engaged us to provide transition support to their projects business unit in the role of General Manager.

In a ‘hands-on’ position we were able to integrate with the team, and identify critical improvement priorities in a short period of time. Working with the executive team, we then presented, agreed and implemented an action plan for the transition and future development of the business unit.

Working to the most critical priorities we implemented a functional organisational structure and improved business processes to provide high-level oversight over the business unit and enable a streamlined handover to the permanent General Manager.

Interim Management Support, Mentoring & Upskilling

When the Procurement Manager on a $1B government infrastructure alliance was required back by their parent company for another project, we were engaged to provide interim support.

Working both remotely and on site we were able to not only manage procurement and the procurement team for the interim period, but also to mentor and upskill staff, and streamline processes so that the workload could be managed by fewer people.

In a difficult labour market, this meant that instead of recruiting for the position, the project could promote an existing staff member into the Procurement Manager role, providing financial savings to the project, and providing progress toward career goals for the employee.

Pre-Qualification Support For Emerging Contractors

With a view of expanding their client base and securing a position on a RTIO minor capital works panel, an emerging SMP contractor engaged us to complete the pre-qualification questionnaire.

With a particularly tight timeframe and without suitably experienced in-house staff, the contractor was able to leverage our flexible work arrangements by using junior staff to compile basic responses which were uploaded to us each COB.

We reviewed and refined the responses overnight, returning them for progressive inclusion in the final submission first thing every morning.

In addition to being awarded a place on the panel, the contractor also benefitted from the guidance provided to junior staff, and the template of responses which can be used as a basis for future bids.

Seamless Support between Project Award and Mobilisation

When a mid-tier civil contractor was awarded a key MRWA project, they were unable to commence critical pre-mobilisation work until project staff finished on other projects.

We were engaged to provide an interim project manager to develop contract deliverables, place key supply and subcontract agreements, and establish a good relationship with MRWA prior to mobilisation.

Through this process we were also able to recommend innovative alternatives to tender methodologies which ultimately led to direct cost savings during project execution.

Innovative Project Appreciations

A medium-sized civil contractor had been unsuccessful at making it onto MRWA bid lists for a number of years.

After identifying a critical gap in suitable, in-house engineering support for the completion of EOI Project Appreciations, we were engaged to assist on several EOIs.

In collaboration with their designers, we incorporated a number of innovative construction solutions into the submission, which saw the contractor go on to bid, and ultimately win one of these projects.

Technical Claims Support

When a mid-tier civil contractor was awarded a $100M BHP contract, the drawings issued for construction differed significantly from what was tendered. Already facing a short mobilisation period, the contractor had no staff available to identify or notify potential claims. We were engaged to assist.

After carrying out a drawing comparison, we were able to remotely monitor daily supervisor diaries to identify potential knock-on effects or delays, and gather supporting information from the team. From this, we established the contractual basis for numerous claims, drafted appropriate letters of notification and progressively compiled claims for submission.

This provided a strong basis for the contractor to amicably resolve all claims with the Client once their internal resources became available.

Business Systems Improvement

When an emerging SMP contractor was acquired by new owners, the existing business procedures were found to be outdated and irrelevant.

To facilitate aligned business practices across a diversifying company, we were engaged to review and revise the procedures in line with operational needs.

In consultation with heads of department we developed a new set of corporate procedures and, working with the contractor’s IT consultant, established an Intranet where these could be easily accessed by the whole business.
